Janet Saunders 

Chief Executive Officer

Janet’s career in the not-for-profit sector spans more than 30 years, including 21 years in leadership and management roles. Over the past decade, she has dedicated her work to the family violence and homelessness sector and currently serves on the Tasmanian Government’s Family and Sexual Violence Consultative Steering Committee.
Janet is passionate about creating lasting change that prevents violence against women and strengthening pathways to safety, stability, and independence. She is particularly focused on improving housing options and long-term pathways for women and children, ensuring access to secure, trauma-informed and affordable homes that support recovery and wellbeing.
Her experience is complemented by a Master of Business Administration and a Diploma in Human Resource Management, which underpin her strategic, collaborative, and people-centred approach to leadership and service development.

Belinda Witter

Deputy CEO

A highly experienced advocate and strategic leader, Belinda brings extensive board and executive expertise across housing, building and construction, health, community services, and education. She is passionate about developing innovative, cross-sector solutions that ensure everyone has the opportunity to live a good life in a safe, secure home.

Her proficiency as a social entrepreneur is reflected in her leadership of Build Up Tassie at Centacare Evolve Housing—an award-winning program supporting young people to overcome barriers to employment. Belinda also played a pivotal role in establishing St Joseph Affordable Homes, a unique construction social enterprise dedicated to reducing homelessness and creating meaningful employment pathways for vulnerable Tasmanians.

Belinda holds a Master of Educational Leadership, a Graduate Certificate in Social Impact, and has completed the Company Directors Course with the Australian Institute of Company Directors. She is widely recognised for her leadership in housing collaborations, workforce initiatives, and advocacy for housing, health, and gender equity. Her commitment to strategies that create real and lasting impact aligns strongly with our mission.

Alice McCoy

Family Services Team Leader

Alice brings over six years of dedicated experience in family support at Hobart Women’s Shelter. Alice excels in guiding her team through a Trauma-Informed Framework, fostering a positive and inclusive culture, and ensuring that the holistic needs of families are met with compassion and expertise.
She is passionate about creating supportive environments where families can thrive. Her leadership style is characterized by a commitment to both professional excellence and a warm, approachable demeanour.

Catherine Stockdale

Finance Manager

Catherine is a Chartered Accountant and specialises in managing the finances of not-for-profit organisations. Prior to joining Hobart Women’s Shelter, Catherine has worked in finance for local community organisations, and a national not-for-profit working to break the cycle of youth unemployment. Catherine is passionate about using her skills to support the most vulnerable members of our society.

Paige Ayres

Property Manager

Paige brings a strong background in private residential property management to her role at Hobart Women’s Shelter. Driven by a passion for supporting women and children experiencing family violence and housing insecurity, Paige made the transition to the community sector to apply her expertise where it can make a meaningful impact.
In her role, Paige is dedicated to providing safe, dignified and welcoming accommodation. She works closely with clients to support their ability to maintain their stay and develop an understanding of rental expectations beyond the shelter environment. With a practical, compassionate approach, Paige plays a key role in helping women build the skills and confidence needed for long-term housing success.

Fiona Cumberland

HR Manager

Fiona joined HWS following a 30 year long career in Employment Services and Vocational Education and Training managing a national registered training organisation (predominately community services qualifications as well as education programs in a corrections environment), and recruitment and labour hire services, both in not-for-profit and for-profit organisations. Fiona held positions leading teams of up to 100 employees and holds an Advanced Diploma in Leadership and Management qualification. Fiona reviewed her career path to follow her passion to focus on human resources in 2021.

Our Family Services, Property, and Administration Teams.

Trauma-Informed principles underpin all that we do. These include safety, trust, empowerment, choice, and collaboration. We work with you and other services to help meet your individual needs. Some examples include support with securing longer-term housing, legal support, referral to mental health services and family violence and financial counselling, and information about education and employment services.

Our team has a range of skills, qualifications, and experiences that complement one another to support women and children who have experienced trauma.

Qualifications within our team include degrees in Social Work, Nursing, Business, Administration, and Accounting, and Diplomas and certificates in Drama Therapy, Youth Work, Leadership, Community Services, Therapeutic, and Counselling.

Our team bring a wealth of experiences and networks from previous roles to support women and children. These include the health sector, education, childcare, indigenous programs, aged care, migrant and refugee services, human resources, employment services, training, retail, hospitality, real estate, administration, and banking.

Hobart Women's Shelter provides safe, emergency accommodation and support to women and children affected by family violence and/or those experiencing homelessness.
