Child and Young People's Support Worker

As a Child and Young People's Support Worker in an accommodation facility, you’ll be part of a skilled team responsible for helping children and young people experience childhood to its fullest.

Key Result Areas

The Child and Young Peoples Support Worker is required to meet the requirements of each of the following Key Result Areas:

Key Result Areas / Key Duties 1. Practice/Professional
1.1 Create a safe, supportive, stimulating and educational environment for children who reside at The Hobart Women’s Shelter
1.2 Build and maintain close relationships with children and their parents/guardians
1.3 When conducting activities ensure that the children are safe and adequately supervised
1.4 Assist with planning, implementing and evaluating programs for individuals and groups of children in conjunction with the child therapist
1.5 Independently plan, implement and evaluate fun, meaningful and developmentally appropriate activities for children
1.6 Develop therapeutic resources for children and their families to support their health, development and wellbeing.
1.7 Distribute information to assist families access appropriate services and resources within the community.

Key Result Areas / Key Duties: 2. Administrative and Organisational Requirements
2.1 Ensure compliance with Child Protection Legislation and policies
2.2 Ensure compliance with The Hobart Women’s Shelter’s privacy and confidentiality policies and procedures
2.3 Work across all age groups as required which also includes a flexibility in working times and rostering
2.4 Assist with writing case notes, documenting progress reports, evaluating therapeutic measures, and writing support letters
2.5 Share in the general cleaning and maintenance of the Hobart Women’s Shelter and child-specific areas, ensuring that the environment is safe, clean and hygienic.
2.6 All admin tasks requests to be completed in a timely manner

3.1 Participate in team building activities which contribute to a positive workplace environment.
3.2 Develop and maintain a personal Self-care Plan to ensure positive health and well-being outcomes
3.3 Encourage professional two-way communication between staff
3.4 Provide opportunities for staff to reflect on their practice, both individually and in group situations
3.5 Ensure personal responsibility and professional accountability are maintained to negate organisational risks
3.6 Work within, and demonstrate commitment to, our values and mission
3.7 Commit to participating in self-identified self-care activities to promote positive health and wellbeing

4.1 Engage in relevant professional development and training to enhance skills, knowledge and attributes
4.2 Willingness to learn/apply trauma-informed care and practice
4.3 Positively and actively engage in professional and line management Supervision
4.4 Engage in the role as a curious learner, effectively provide and receive information, and take on constructive feedback to enhance job satisfaction
4.5 Support clients and staff to engage in services that promote learning and development
4.6 Any other duties as advised

Personal and Professional Characteristics
The ability to apply a professional practice, be well organised, to be able to prioritise and be selfdirected. Can effectively implement a Self-care Plan to maintain a high level of health and well-being, and to perform the role at the level required. Demonstrate a sense of humour and fun to enjoy the work while also being able to attune and understand what clients and stakeholders need. Can engage with others professionally and can understand the process of continuous improvement and continual change in the sector. Have a positive self-perception and can enjoy the challenges the role brings under the leadership of the Practice Manager.

Experience
Relevant experience in a similar role.

Qualifications
A Certificate III or IV in Early Childhood Education or Community Services or Allied Health OR equivalent experience working with children and families.

Knowledge
Workplace Health & Safety Act 2011 Other relevant State and Commonwealth based Legislation and associated Regulations

Salary
Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award 2010, level 3.

General Requirements
• Current Driver’s Licence
• Working with Vulnerable People Check
• Current Police Check
• IT proficiency in the use of Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Adobe Illustrator, Drop Box or other cloud-based technologies, or the ability to learn these packages
• First Aid, or the commitment to be trained

Selection Criteria
• Experience in providing high quality support and care to meet the physical, social, emotional and intellectual needs of individuals and groups of children.
• Thorough knowledge of children’s development and ability to observe, plan, implement and evaluate developmentally appropriate children’s programs.
• The ability to work within a Professional Practice and Ethical Decision-Making Frameworks.
• Well developed interpersonal and communication skills.
• Experience writing case notes
• Ability to develop a self-care plan and identify needs.
• The ability to transfer learning, skills and knowledge from prior education and training to the requirements of the role.
